Interviews with Ben Dugas

A few weeks ago Andrew was interviewed by our friend Ben... A couple of weeks after that, Ben interviewed me... Both of the interviews are related and are quite laid back and in my opinion, funny... Mine is sort of a response to his....

You can read Andrew's interview HERE.

And my interview HERE.

Jitter Magazine

I have a pretty long interview (in German) in the current issue of Jitter Magazine... The guy who owns and runs this magazine is amazing, he interviewed me in person when I was in Berlin last year, Jitter really seems like a labour of love... Anyway, its a cool mag if you can get your hands on a copy. Its also the first mag to interview me to ask about and publish pages from the Road of Knives, so Shawn and Zak have some stuff in here too... They also have some interviews in English with the character designers from God of War II, those guys are crazy talented... Here are some photos of the layout...

Toronto

I'm back in Toronto now and once again settled into working away in this studio... I like my studio here a lot, I have a massive drafting table, a bunch of smaller tables, a million books, a bathtub, and a couch to sleep on... So I'm working away but I thought I'd post on here because its been awhile...

I don't have a lot to post... I was at that Carte Blanche 2 book signing and took a bunch of photos with my phone, but my phone broke since then so they are gone...

I did a Road of Knives page a little while ago, its not the best drawing in the world but it makes sense within the story... We are approaching our 100th page, and I think we might release the first volume in book format soon...

Also, HandMade Posters in Norway has just released a 6 colour screenprint of one of my images. Its an edition of 100, and is available for sale through the HMP site here.

One last thing, I got a profile posted on Blogto, you can see it here. Check it out if you want to see some studio shots and a little write up...

Ok, thats it for now, now that I'm back I'll be posting a bit more often I think... I'm going to take some studio shots if I can borrow a camera off one of my buds...

Zak's book review

Zak Smith wrote a review of my book... I'm pretty pumped about it because, aside from being buds and co-collaborators, he's also an artist I have shitloads of respect for... You can read the review here.

booooorrrring....

So I think this post will be a little on the dull side, its just a few books and mags I've been in in the last little while... but not dull enough to not post it apparently, cause, I don't know, I like books and magazines and I get a little excited when my work gets printed in them...

Also, I appreciate when someone decides to put me in their publication, so this way I can help promote it for them a bit... But i don't think its very good promotion cause I don't think very many people really read my blog...

OK! Books! Magazines!

I'm particularly excited about this one:

It's entitled 'Illusive 2: Contemporary Illustration and its Context'. It's pretty huge, 340 pages lots of great interviews and examples of work... Its published by die gestalten verlag, one of my favourite publishers....

Ok, the next one is a Spanish magazine, its called Lamono, and we did a little interview a while back. The magazine has an awesome cover, some good art, and lots of pictures of pretty girls inside...

Ok, the last one actually came out a while ago, its a giant package from China called Plugzine vol. 2. The magazine is huge, tons of art in it (mostly from China and Japan), and comes with a blank sketchbook. I got 4 copies in the mail, so I have 4 new sketchbooks...

Ah, ok, thats it! The next post will be better, I got my new book in the mail! I'll photograph it and do a post soon...Oh, and I have photos from NYC last week, the trip was pretty awesome...

Show up at the Whitney

My Cerberus piece is on display at the Whitney, its in a group show that will be up until February 17th. Here is their little blurb for the show on their site:

Two Years
on view October 17, 2007 - February 17, 2008

Acquisitions for the permanent collection are at the heart of the Museum's mission to present the work of American artists in the contexts of the present and the past, and in anticipation of the future. Two Years brings on view important gifts and purchases from 2006 and 2007.

I always wondered if the Whitney fucked up, assuming I was American, but I'm sure they do their research and it turns out there is another Canadian in the show as well. I'm going to be in NYC at the end of January, and I'm pretty excited to check out the show...

You can check out the Whitney's website here, and my piece got mentioned in a review, here.

Also, Andrew Wilson started a blog as well, and it is WAY better than mine...

thank god for graval

Its been a good couple of weeks. I did two artist talks and they both went well I think... Man, I get so nervous for those things, like 'on-the-verge-of-throwing-up" type of nervous, but once I get up there its not so bad... One of the talks was for Ed Pien's class at OCAD, he is one of my favourite artists, you can look at his stuff here

There's a bunch of other links to his work on that page as well...

I've been spending a lot of time getting the new studio in working condition, the walls and floor are looking good now, and I have most of my stuff moved in...

Hmmm...earlier today I finished my new page for the Road of Knives: Uh, click on it, it looks better big...

I went to Canzine and TIAF a couple of weekends ago...Maybe I just don't like zines and art, cause neither of the fairs really did much for me... except I met a couple of gallerists from Marseille, they seem like nice and honest dudes and I'm going to be sending them some work for a couple of upcoming art fairs:

Dukan & Hourdequin

Uhh... I thought I had more to write than this... I'm going to save what I have and finish tomorrow...

OK, its tomorrow now, I remembered something that I forgot to include last night, I have a profile in this months Juxtapoz, thats exciting. Well, for me anyway...

The issue is so-so... I'm not that big on Shepard Fairey but Saelee Oh has a feature in this issue as well, I think she's pretty fantastic...

Ok, last couple of things. Andrew and I moved the rest of the stuff out of my old studio...

We thought it would be awesome to throw my roll of bubble wrap off the 8th floor fire escape. I got this photo of Andrew up there but you can't really see him. Then I didn't get any photos of it coming down, but it wasn't very awesome anyway, it just landed neatly beside andrews car. It was a really big letdown...

Now I'm pretty much set up in the new space, it feels good to have a place to work again...

Then andrew dressed up as a ghost and we drove around in his car...

recent press

I haven't updated in a month, I've just been hunched over my desk working on some drawings for an upcoming artfair, so there hasn't been much worth mentioning... I thought i should give the blog some sort of update though. This might be boring as shit, but here are some recent magazines I've had work in... Oh wait, I just thought of a better update! Wait, no, I'll post the better update next time... The photos on this post are not too crisp, I took them with my camera phone, but it was a litle too dark I think...

A little bit back I was in a Spanish mag called Belio, it had like 100 illustrations in it, a lot of them were pretty sick... I didn't take a photo of my work in it though.

The next mag blew my mind, its a Brazilian teen magazine marketed towards young ladies. Its got stuff like fashion tips and photos of cute boys and horoscopes. Its cool that they have an art section though...

Here's a page from the mag to give you an idea of what it's like...

The most recent mag is from Taiwan, a publication called DPI. The woman that I was talking to from the mag was named Lulu, and she was amazing. I'd be all like: "Sorry I gave you these images 2 weeks late..." and she was all like: "It doesn't matter! Meeting artists makes my life worth living! I love everything!" I'm not making fun of her at all, she blew my mind, I imagine that going on a date with her would be like chilling out at Pee-wee's Playhouse for the afternoon... Also, I got 8 pages, I've never had that large of a spread before...

The last mag is out of Paris, its the first time I've had a cover, so that felt pretty good. They never sent me a free copy though, so I had to take a photo of me holding it in a magazine store cause it costs $30. One of my friends felt sorry for me and bought me a copy in the end... In the magazines defense, they may have sent me a copy, theres a really good chance that I sent them the wrong address...

Ok, I'll be the first to say that this entry sucks. I'm not trying to be all like: "I'm in magazines, I'm cool", but i don't know what I'm trying to be "all like." I spend almost every waking moment sitting at a desk listen to Star Wars audiobooks and I haven't had sex in months, I know I'm not cool! I guess I just needed something to post because its been a bit, and I'm not done the work for the fair yet... Oh, but tomorrow's post will be better, it will have slugs and horses n it! OK, back to my desk to draw...
