I've been using mostly facebook for art updates, but do want to start posting again soon. In the meantime, I have been using instagram to post art and studio shots, follow me here:

instagram.com/nicholasdigenovaNicholas Di Genovahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02981618699495050707noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270753313925083121.post-44355362021772704912012-12-06T19:27:00.000-05:002012-12-06T19:29:17.722-05:00A Few Things

Hey people, here are some things...

I got twitter. Wil Kucey told me I should get it to update people on my work and shows and stuff. So if you have twitter, and would like to follow me, here's my profile... So far it's not funny like other people on twitter, it's mostly gonna be studio shots and show updates, I'm not sure how to be funny in 140 characters yet...

https://twitter.com/nicholas_dg

Also, I did this interview quite awhile back but forgot to put it on here. Because I did it back in the summer I already wish I answered some of the questions differently, but I guess that just means I'm changing, which I guess is a good thing, I guess....

http://www.emptykingdom.com/main/featured/ek-interview-nicholas-di-genova/

I recently received an email from a girl named Annie Bradford Gleason Metheany that I enjoyed (I also really really like her name). She had some of my work tattooed and I asked her if I could put it up here. The tattoo artist was Greg Solomon at Anipeg Tattoos, and I think they turned out really great. I appreciate you sending them along Annie!

Ok, I guess the next thing is my facebook art page. I've been working on it for awhile now, getting some old work uploaded on it. Then I stopped uploading old work on it, and now I use it as a place to post new work, news, weird art things... Anyway, if you have facebook and want to get some art news stuff through there, 'like' it....

Ok, that's enough for now... Aside from the tattoos, I know this post was pretty 'administrative' feeling... The next post will be the most exciting thing you've ever read, I promise.Nicholas Di Genovahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02981618699495050707noreply@blogger.com75tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270753313925083121.post-81202156080229942812012-10-25T21:35:00.001-05:002012-10-25T21:35:16.733-05:00Art Toronto

So I'm starting to use this blog again, it's been a long time since I've updated it. Other than a couple small updates over the last couple weeks, I haven't used this thing much since finishing my show for Paris. A lot has changed since then, and I sorta disappeared for a bit.

A year ago, when I had a couple of months left to finish my show, Jamiyla and I broke up kinda suddenly, and although we both thought it was a good idea it sorta messed me up mentally. But I still had two months left on my solo and I was really feeling the pressure of the deadline, so I couldn't really deal with it, I had to just keep my head down and not think about it, just think about finishing the show. Then, when I finally did finish the show and came back from Paris, I crashed. Nothing too dramatic, I didn't cry or break anything, but I felt like I was just totally exhausted. The idea of making stuff made me panic, I just needed a break and couldn't will myself into the studio for a couple of months. I hadn't stopped or relaxed for quite some time, pretty much since I started working as an artist professionally, and felt like I was on the verge of something bad and really just needed to sleep a lot and sit in a chair and play a lot of horrible RPGs. Anyway, I took some time off, it felt great and horrible at the same time.

Then I found an empty room used for storage across the hall from my apartment, started renting it as a studio, and got it all set up. It's smaller than my old studio, but private. Since then I have been working consistently, teaching myself how to do 3D work, but have put no emphasis on actually finishing or presenting anything, just on being in the studio, listening to a lot of podcasts, experimenting and having a great time. Most of what I've made has been trashed, but I have learned a lot, become a lot happier over the past several months, and actually feel more excited about making things and showing and all that stuff than I ever have. To be a bit cliche, I've had a bad year but I feel stronger than ever now, I feel that spark of uncontrollable energy and excitement that I experienced when I first moved to Toronto and started to build my career 12 years ago.

Anyway, I won't go on and on, I know I am making this sound a bit dramatic and 'first world problems'-y, I know I have a great life, I just wanted to explain my absence. Also, Jamiyla and I are still really close friends, her and Adrienne Kammerer are actually moving down the hall from me in a couple of months, and their new work is looking great, I'll post some of it on here soon.

Ok, on to some things. What should I do first? I'll start with my new apartment.

The last couple of months working on my Paris show I was living in the studio, which is actually fine because there is a kitchen and bathroom set up there, but the actual sleeping part wasn't ideal.

Once I finished the show, Team Macho was kind enough to let me live with them for the third time. And this time I actually got my own bedroom, the first time I lived under their stupid ping pong table for $50 a month... So the good news is my new place is cheap, I'm here with friends, and they are all very hard working and talented, so it pushes me to want to work hard and improve myself. The bad news is it's a bit of a dump. Here are some shots of the place.

If you click on any of the photos on this blog they get big...

Here's my bedroom, it's not very big and there's no window, but it's cheap and I've got a sweet lamp. The empty area under my bed is where I plan on photographing my dioramas...

Here's the path to Stephen's tent that he sleeps in. It's kinda weird back there:

Jessica Palmer isn't part of Team Macho, but she uses our wood shop as a place to work on stop motion animations when she has a deadline. She shows up with her supplies and some clothes, works her ass off for two weeks, takes off and we see here about 4 months later. I really like having her around, she's also a great painter.

Our awful kitchen:

Our awful bathroom:

Our so-so living room. I actually like it quite a bit, the chairs are pretty comfy:

Our window that doubles as a door:

I complain a lot about the apartment being really gross, but I like living here quite a bit. It's big, I like the location, and I live with some of my closest friends. Also, they are all really hard workers, which in turn pushes me to work harder.

Ok, so across the hall from the apartment is my little studio. Here's how it looked when I got it:

I built this spray booth to spray my miniatures in, it vents outside. I made it with a range hood from Canadian Tire:

My private little corner of the world to sit and relax, the chair is super comfortable:

Ok, so as far as what I've been working on other than setting up the new studio, here's some stuff. Like I said, I've been working on a bit of 3D work, diorama type stuff that would be paired up with drawings, like in the Natural History Museum in New York but way way smaller...

So I'm doing a few that have to do with the minotaur myth, I thought I'd start with his conception...I made this scene of the Cretan Bull having sex with the fake cow containing King Mino's wife. None of these pieces are finished, so don't email me and tell me I suck until they are done. Then you can email me and tell me I suck:

Then I made this hill and cows on a much smaller scale:

So ideally when you put them together its going to look like a scene that makes sense, with the funny business going on in the foreground and the rest of the pasture in the background. I know this looks awful right now, I have to set it up with the proper lights, install some sort of backdrop, and learn how to properly use my camera before I photograph the final. I bought a decent camera, but I'm still learning how to use it, I've never known anything about photography, I've been reading a book but it's all quite a bit to take in. Oh, speaking of, if anyone can recommend a book on the general principles of photography, I would appreciate it. Also, if anyone can think of any resources concerning lighting or shooting miniatures, I would really really appreciate that...

Here's the very beginning of the second Minotaur shot, what he looks like as an infant. I'm working on the face and building a crib now...

Ok, so the other series of dioramas/drawings I'm working on is about Gorgons, that's the species that Medusa belongs to. Right now I'm creating the habitat that the creature lives in, the idea is that it's piled full of people and animals that she has turned to stone, and put on display like some sort of odd museum. This is just the very beginning stage, but this is what I got so far. They are all painted black initially, and I'll dry brush them up from there to look like stone. The minotaur scene was painted black like this initially as well...

I don't think anyone actually reads this blog anymore because I stopped updating it for a bit, but I'm trying to get back on it. Hopefully later this week I'll have a major update with some shots of some work in progress, my new studio, my new bike, and maybe my crappy apartment or something.

Anyway, just want to post that tomorrow I'll be a part of a panel discussion at OCADU, if you go to OCAD and want to see it, come on by...

Blogger is all different than it used to be, I can't figure out how to left-justify that text up there. Anyway, Bruce Sellery is going to give a talk about managing your money as an artist, and then a few of us who have been living as artists will talk a bit and answer questions. I think this talk is a really good idea, when I first went to art school I really really blew through my OSAP very quickly during my first year, and kinda messed everything up. I still kinda do stuff like that, so I'm not sure if anyone should take my advice, but maybe people can learn from my past and current mistakes.

It says on the flyer that you have to register beforehand, but I don't really think they will not let you in if you just show up, the last time I did one of these the auditorium was only half full. Use some line about a portion of your tuition fees going towards the student union or something or other....

Anyway, I'm really excited to be a part of this, I like doing any sort of panel discussion or public speaking that allows me to get in touch with people I've never met before, if anyone from OCADU reads this, thanks for inviting me to talk!Nicholas Di Genovahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02981618699495050707noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270753313925083121.post-74557924781334036772012-09-04T15:17:00.001-05:002012-09-04T22:39:39.980-05:00Mobile app test...

I took a little rest after the show, and have been back in the studio for the last couple of months, experimenting with some new work. It's 3D work, which is a bit weird for me. I actually studied sculpture back in college, but it's been years since I made anything other than drawings. Once I get this work to a point that I'm confident with, I'll post some progress shots here. I also want to post some shots from Paris, the opening, and thank some of the people that helped me get my show together. This will all be included in my next update.

For now, just a short one. I am taking part in a group show at Neurotitan in Berlin at the end of this week, the opening reception is Friday February 10th and it runs for about a month. Neurrotitan is a really cool place, probably my favourite spot in Berlin. The front is a large art shop, selling comings, books, prints (I've been selling my stuff there since around 2008), and the back room is a large gallery. Below are links to the gallery's website (in German), and the facebook event page:

http://www.neurotitan.de/

http://www.facebook.com/events/104018139727051/

The next thing is a big thank you to James Craig, my highschool art teacher. James (formerly known, to me, as Mr. Craig), is the guy responsible for my decision to go to art college. In highschool I was always drawing and painting, but didn't realize that it could actually be a career, and I wasn't particularly talented, I just liked doing it. James told me one day that a lot of 'what it takes to make it' is just drive, and that he thought I might have enough drive to make a career out of it, and I never looked back. We have kept in touch ever since. James went through teacher's college very quickly, and got the teaching job when I was in grade 13, so he was around 22 years old, and I was 18 when we met, so we're basically the same age.

James asked me to come and talk to his classes in my hometown a couple of weeks ago, it was great to go back to my old school and wander the halls that I used to spend so much time in, and to see some of my little cousins that still go there. Anyway, thank you James, I had a great time. Here is a photo of the two of us together.

I think James has a unique way of teaching that touches students differently than any teacher I have met before. He teaches the old art history stuff that must be taught, but fills his room with examples of really exciting contemporary art and is always turning his students onto new artists. Anyway, I won't go on and on, but trust me, this guy is great. He's also become a teacher of mine again in a sense. James constructs and paints brilliant miniatures, and has one multiple awards for his work. As I said above, I'm starting to make some 3D work again, dioramas, and I'm starting to bug James for little nuggets of info. Below is some of James' award winning work:

Here Is James' website if you want to see more: http://www.lostinthewarp.com/

Ok, that's it for now, next time I will finally post some Paris stuff, and maybe some pics of what I've been working on if I can make them suck a little less before then.

Best, Nicholas

Nicholas Di Genovahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02981618699495050707noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270753313925083121.post-46321965574180468992011-11-06T11:47:00.005-05:002011-11-06T12:24:39.766-05:00Preemptive Evolution in Paris
Hey Everyone, just wanted to finally make a blog post about my solo show in Paris with the press release, happening this thursday November 10th. I've been working on it for what seems like forever, but was actually 18 months. If anyone is in Paris, come on by, or if you know someone is Paris that you think may be interested, please let them know about it. I've posted these before, but I just want to put a cross section of my work for the show on here, and below that is the press release. Just to make it simple though, here is the name and location of the gallery:

Galerie Dukan Hourdequin

24 rue Pastourelle

75003, Paris

Opening thursday November 10th, 6-9 pm.

And HERE is the event page on Facebook.

If you come to the opening, come up to me or Andrew and introduce yourself, we don't really know anyone there so we're looking for friends. Ok, here are some images (I know I've posted them before in separate posts, this will be the last time) and press release. There will be 18 pieces in the show but I don't want to post them all here. Thank you so much to William Huffman for writing the press release.

dukan hourdequin gallery is pleased to present Preemptive Evolution, the first solo exhibition in France by Canadian artist Nicholas Di Genova (1981).

Nicholas Di Genova has developed a unique practice that is as firmly rooted in the utterly fantastical as it is in the deeply scientific. His depictions of hybrid creatures examine wildlife illustration through a Sci-fi lens. Di Genova’s highly detailed, and often encyclopaedic investigations of the natural world, yield monstrosities that are the most unlikely of amalgamations – these can be, for instance, a fusion of cat, goat and snake with cormorant, or tortoise merging into carnivorous plant and even a toad with eight, tentacle-like tongues. His depictions are obviously imagined; but Di Genova’s illustrative precision, makes these Audubon caricatures almost plausible.

His materials are simple; he looks to the conventions of analogue animation, which employs gouache paint on Mylar, or the very basic approach of ink on paper. But Di Genova pushes line-work and a compact colour palette to the extreme; his seamless and fluid application of medium is in the service of an unparalleled intricacy of image. From the tiniest black and white elements (which can be a mere couple of centimetres square) to the robust and colourful, full-sized works, Di Genova’s articulation of shape and texture is nothing short of masterful.

For this exhibition the artist presents a new work entitled10,000 Vertebrates which takes the form of a genus grid comprising 10,000 micro-portraits – perhaps a periodic table of this morphed and grotesque animal species. This particular work is pivotal; certainly because it embodies Di Genova’s relentless capacity for minutiae and detail but moreover, it gives reference to the research back story of his practice. From books, the internet, film and television – this is a practice contingent on mining a diversity of source materials, from factual to absolutely fiction. Not merely a random selection of beaks, claws, fangs, feathers, fur and scales, these creatures are built conceptually first – each telling a distinctive story that is equal parts biology and mythology.

William Huffman, Toronto, July 2011

William Huffman is an visual arts educator, writer and curator based in Toronto, Canada. He currently holds the post of Associate Director at Toronto Arts Council.

William Huffman, Toronto, Juillet 2011

William Huffman est un commissaire d'exposition basé à Toronto, Canada. I think that Jamiyla and Adrienne's new work is looking amazing. I have never met Katy, but what she has done for the show is looking great as well.

Here is the banner from the show, and a couple of Jamiyla and Adrienne's new pieces. Lots of work has been done on my show, and a lot has changed in my life in the last couple of months.

First off, here is some new work for my show, I just got the mylar pieces scanned at Uberscan, a great resource in Toronto for high quality captures of large pieces. They are a bit expensive, I literally spent the rest of my money on these scans, but they are worth it I think. Plus the people at Uberscan are incredibly pleasant to work with.

Anyway, here they are, click on them to make them big, the files are pretty large. I've posted a couple of these on here before, but I want to show the grids together because they are meant to be seen together, and wanted to put a good scan of the Kelpie up.

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UQ58YgpG1ck/TnaSHwNgAMI/AAAAAAAACs0/627h3Jmg6bA/s400/wanderingdesertdemonweb.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653867044108501186" style="display: block; In Syntactic Structures, he uses it as an example of a sentence that has never been spoken before, syntactically correct but semantically nonsensical.

Meaningless at first sight, this haiku echoes the current chaos and is not only grammatically correct. The liberty that confers language enables to create concepts which grasp the real better than analyzing it. The oxymoron gives free rein to the thought and as silence can be eloquent, ideas can be green, green without color and sleep, but furiously! As poetry springs up with images, this exhibition tends to stimulate our poetic, metaphorical and hallucinatory abilities: the mind is always at the origin of the meaning.

Ok, here are some studio shots to end the post. For the last year or so I've been working away on a solo show for Dukan et Hourdequin in Paris, and I'm now down to the three month mark, which means I basically do nothing other than work until the damn thing is done. Coming closer to the end of a deadline is always a bit rough, but in the past I've always been frightened enough to get it finished.

Hopefully I get it done this time too, and in three months I'll post an invite to my show. Below is some of the work I've done so far, some is finished, some is partially finished, and some doesn't exist yet, so instead of posting blank white photos or photos of an empty drafting table, I decided not to post those ones yet.

I'm particularly excited about the first piece, it's the centerpiece for the show, 10 000 vertebrates divided into the 5 classes, I worked on it for 18 months and just finished it this afternoon, so I'm pretty happy right now.

Here is some work, and below that some shots of the studio. The first few shots are details of the centerpiece, click any of them to zoom.

<img style="display:block; One of my interns from last summer, Andrew Remington Bailey, and a good friend who has just moved back from London, Tyler Bright Hilton, just moved in. It is more frequent that we come across artists whose practice is based in the act of drawing, or with a strong graphic sensibility. Typically sidelined as a less than serious pursuit or as a means of preparation and study, Hanged + Drawn thrusts 6 Canadian artists of inimitable skill and talent forward as the vanguard of this new generation of mark makers. Hanged + Drawn highlights artists who are forming the basis of their artistic practices in their ability to develop a drawn language. These artists have all been the focus of critical contemporary collectors and institutions, having shown in almost all major international art fairs and within museums and institutions across North America and Europe.

Digital catalogue available upon request.
For information, inquiries or previews, contact Director Wil Kucey: 4165328467 or wil@le-gallery.ca

Here is my piece in the show, it's 24" x 24", ink and animation paint on mylar, titled Canopy Devil. It's pay-what-you-can, there will be beer for sale, and I'll be talking about my work and showing some images that go back as far as 1992 (I was 11) and some will be as recent as half an hour before I leave my studio to go do the talk. Come on out of you are free, here is the facebook page, below is the poster.

The next thing is a fundraiser I am taking part in in Naples Italy. It is a benefit auction for Mattia Amf Onlus Fagnoni, a young boy born with Sandhoff Syndrome, a generic, degenerative and lethal disease. Very little is known about the disease, and there is no standard treatment, and the disease is lethal. In fact, Mattia is the only person in Italy suffering from the disease, which made it extremely difficult for his parents to have him diagnosed and to figure out his needs. They have started a foundation to raise awareness of the disease, and to generate money to go towards research and to help the families of children suffering from it. There are over 1000 works available for auction, and over 800 artists participating. You can visit their facebook page if you would like to learn more, the auction starts Tuesday. If you are in or around Naples, it seems like it is going to be a massive event.

Here is a piece that has actually been finished since the winter. I didn't want to post it though because it was a gift for the girlfriend of the person who bought it, so I didn't want to post it too soon and potentially ruin the surprise. It's 18" x 24".

The last thing is this tattoo that India Amara Nicholls of The Pearl Harbor Gift Shop recently did.
